Visit the ruins of the Holly Cross Monastery
Also known as Timios Stavros Monastery.
The Monastery of the Holy Cross is found in the venue of a post-Roman, early Byzantine settlement, which hasn't been archaeologically researched, that is mentioned in the "Acts of the Apostles" as "chora Anogyron" (chora = land).
The church is built in the eastern part of a Basilica with three aisles, which perhaps is paleo-Christian. Other arch-covered Basilica with three aisles was built in the mid Byzantine times, extant up to some height.
Today's church was built in the 14th century, in the style of a temple with one aisle and a cupola. Some remains of frescoes, which can be categorised as Paleologian painting and are dated back to the 15th century, are extant in the interior. Quite probably, they are the work of painters that ended up in Cyprus after the capture of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks in 1453.
